Unfortunately, the January Team Tennis Tournament was rained out! We were looking forward to trying a new team tennis format, but it rained Friday afternoon and night and changed our plans. We had 41 people signed up for the tournament and we hope to try this format again some time soon. Once the rain stopped and the courts dried, we did play a little mixed doubles Saturday afternoon with 17 men and 14 women participating.
NEXT TOURNAMENT
The February Tournament will be held on February 14 and 15. It will be a straight doubles tournament - men’s doubles and ladies’ doubles. We are hoping the weather will cooperate and allow us to have a successful tournament. We look forward to seeing all of you. If you would like to participate, sign up before 7 o’clock Friday night before the tournament. If you cannot be at the tennis center, call Gary Edwards at (619)390-8412 or try the pay phone at the tennis club on Friday at (760)767-9748.
JANUARY & FEBRUARY HIKES
We did go on a brief hike in January which was shortened by rain. Ruth Johnson guided us to an area in Culp Valley which has a Yoni depiction on a large rock. The Yoni symbol was used in fertility rites by the Cahuilla Indians which inhabited the Anza-Borrego area at one time. There are also several springs in the area. For our February hike, we plan to take the Borrego Palm Canyon Nature Trail which starts at the Borrego campground and leads to a beautiful palm oasis with lots of shade and a small stream. This is a 1½ -mile moderate uphill trail, one way, to the grove. We encourage you to join us and enjoy more of the beautiful Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. If you are interested in going on this hike, meet at the tennis club campground on Friday morning at 8 o’clock. Hope to see you then!
