TENNIS TALK

December 1997
HOME ABOUT NEWSLETTERS FACILITY EMAIL

Borrego Days and the Borrego October Tennis Classic occurred on the same weekend this year. Unfortuneatly, most of us were playing tennis during the parade, and missed the arts/crafts fair and bar-b-que.

This month's Tournament is scheduled for December 7 - 8 (First Weekend of the Month). Bring a pal along to play in our friendly games in the sun. Make sure to either call the Minkels, Ottes, Schultzes by Tuesday night to sign up, or call the club Wednesday (December 4) at (760)767-9748???

You can also sign-up by mail or e-mail at jschultz@linkonlinenet:

John Schultz
1400 Sycamore Avenue
Fullerton, CA 92831 (714) 738-8842 - Home

Tournament cost is $10 per person. You must join the club to play in a second tournament of any season, pro-rating at $6 per missed tournament. The yearly fee at the beginning of the season is only $35. RV sites are just $7.50 per day. Tent sites are only $5.00 per day.

Tom's Desert

I think my favorites include
the smell of the plants in the high desert
the crunch of the coarse sand under foot
the intense blue sky
the signs of brutal flash floods on now dry canyons
the views unobstructed by trees, man-made structures or stuff in the air
the live oak trees among open grassy hills
the feeling of nothing between you and the world - you better be taking care of yourself out there because nature's rules are severe, but as long as yu follow the rules you will be well rewarded
the vastly different strategies for survival - plants that grow quickly with just a little rain versus those that stock up for the long term
the rapid change in surroundings with just a few miles of travel; such as cool, high grassy meadows; to hot dry lake beds; to steep rocks and sandy flats."

(Our desert loving son, Tom, who now lives in Maryland wrote these notes after seeing some films of Ansza Borrego. We'd like to share them with you all)

October Hike

No hike was organized for October.

December Hike

Expect a hike Friday, December 5. We will find a 2 or so mile hike at an interesting location in the surrounding park. If you wish to go on this adventure, please meet at the BSTC parking lot at 8:00 a.m.

BSTC has been on the Internet for 6 months now

Our "URL" is http:// www.fastwave.net/bstc, and this and the previous 3 newsletters are available there, along with lodging and other information. E-mail bstc@fastwave.net and tell us if we can take your name off of the mailing list, and add it to the e-mailing list. Internet costs to the club is zero, but postage costs 32 cents, and this could save the club money, and Carmen and Marilyn can spend less time doing the mailings.

Questions or Suggestions?

Just call any of our board members: John Schultz, Mary Quimby, or Fred Wantland.

NOTE: this is just the preliminary newsletter.
