OCTOBER 27 - 28, 2012 STRAIGHT DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

Start times for next Tournament:

As always, the format will be determined by the turnout. Count on either double elimination or one of our new round robin formats. Vickie Mercer is the new tournament director, assisted by Roz and anyone else who wants to participate. As the end of October is the start of "the season", it is a good idea to make reservations early. If you are planning to play, you should email or call Vickie Mercer - email: vickiesbstcmail@gmail.com, phone: 206-550-3914). You must sign up by 6:00 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse or contact Vickie or Roz. The draw will be completed in the vicinity of 8:30pm to 9:30pm on the night before the first day of the tournament. In case of problems, call Vickie at 206-550-3914 or the tennis center 760-767-0577. Play will begin on Saturday, usually at 9, but in case of a big turnout, as early as 8am. If you want us to call you with the start time, and don't have internet access, add your phone number with your name when you sign up, or, preferably, arrange to have someone you know check and contact you. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

BORREGO DAYS
Late October is always the kick-off for the tourist season in Borrego Springs. Borrego Days (info at: (www.borregospringschamber.com/BorregoDays) features a parade, and various events over the same weekend as the tennis tournament.

SATURDAY HAPPY HOUR AND POT LUCK
We will resume our usual Saturday night festivities with a happy hour at 6:30pm, either pool-side or in the clubhouse when the weather is inclement. Dinner starts at 7pm. An emcee will determine the order in which tables get food (with random cards) and orchestrate some form of entertainment. If you come bearing door prizes, please place them in the door prize area before dinner.

A NEW ADMINISTRATION
Continue thinking of a new president for the club -- perhaps, yourself! We will seek candidates over the summer and elect one at the October tournament. Preferably, the candidate will be retired, as us working stiffs don't have much time to spare.

BORREGO NEWS
By the time of the tournament, a new automated solar power plant will have been constructed and online in Borrego. The 26.6 Megawatt plant will occupy nearly 1/2 a square mile and is located on a former vinyard in the agricultural area of the valley.

APRIL 2012 STRAIGHT DOUBLES TOURNAMENT
A fair turnout of 42 participants attended the straight doubles tournament in April - 19 men and 23 women. With 20 men, Jef devised a new form of round robin: 5 men played together, playing 4 matches, each with a different partner. Opposing them are 5 other men, each playing with different partners. Each round is composed of 2 matches with 2 players sitting out. A total of 5 rounds occurs with each player playing 4 matches. In the case of 9 players, some play in all 5 matches. After debugging it during the tournament, a way was attempted to not play an opponent more than twice nor less than once. Still working on a good pattern. Here is the best I've come up with so far, but it still has a little way to go:

ROUND 1 (5,10 sit out)ROUND 2 (4,9 sit out)ROUND 3 (3,8 sit out)ROUND 4 (2,7 sit out)ROUND 5 (1,6 sit out)
1-2 v. 6-71-3 v. 6-81-5 v. 7-91-4 v. 6-92-3 v. 9-10
3-4 v. 8-92-5 v. 7-102-4 v. 6-103-5 v. 8-104-5 v. 7-8

We started the tournament on time even after a big rain the previous night, and weather was pretty nice the entire weekend, with highs in the 70s and 80s! Jef won the $100 drawing for paying all 6 tournament fees. Congratulations, Jef! Jef won, despite missing an awesomly good auction put on by the Yorba Linda girls: Barbara, Marla and Sandi on Saturday night after the banquet, when the drawing occured.

Jackie Shallahamer won the $50 drawing, congratulations Jackie!

TANDEM WRITING
The following was received from an SMU English professor: "This assignment was actually turned in by two of my English students: Rebecca (last name deleted) and Gary (last name deleted). The assignment, in English 44A, Creative Writing, was an experiment with a new form called the tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the person sitting to his or her immediate right. One of you will then write the first paragraph of a short story. The partner will read the first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story. The first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back and forth. Remember to re-read what has been written each time in order to keep the story coherent. The story is over when both agree a conclusion has been reached."

At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. The camomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times, that he liked camomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about him too much her asthma started acting up again. So camomile was out of the question.

Meanwhile, Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack squadron now in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to think about than the neuroses of an air-headed asthmatic bimbo named Laurie with whom he had spent one sweaty night over a year ago. "A.S.Harris to Geostation 17," he said into his transgalactic communicator. "Polar orbit established. No sign of resistance so far..." But before he could sign off a bluish particle beam flashed out of nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship's cargo bay. The jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across the cockpit.

He bumped his head and died almost immediately, but not before he felt one last pang of regret for psychically brutalizing the one woman who had ever had feelings for him. Soon afterwards, Earth stopped its pointless hostilities towards the peaceful farmers of Skylon 4. "Congress Passes Law Permanently Abolishing War and Space Travel.". Laurie read in her newspaper one morning. The news simultaneously excited her and bored her. She stared out the window, dreaming of her youth-when the days had passed unhurriedly and carefree, with no newspapers to read, no television to distract her from her sense of innocent wonder at all the beautiful things around her. "Why must one lose one's innocence to become a woman?" she pondered wistfully.

Little did she know, but she has less than 10 seconds to live. Thousands of miles above the city, the Anu'udrian mothership launched the first of its lithium fusion missiles. The dim-witted wimpy peaceniks who pushed the Unilateral Aerospace Disarmament Treaty through Congress had left Earth a defenseless target for the hostile alien empires who were determined to destroy the human race. Within two hours after the passage of the treaty the Anu'udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough firepower to pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop them, they swiftly initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium fusion missile entered the atmosphere unimpeded. The President, in his top-secret mobile submarine headquarters on the ocean floor off the coast of Guam, felt the inconceivably massive explosion which vaporized Laurie and 85 million other Americans. The President slammed his fist on the conference table. "We can't allow this! I'm going to veto that treaty! Let's blow'em out of the sky!"

This is absurd. I refuse to continue this mockery of literature. My writing partner is a violent, chauvinistic, semi-literate adolescent.

Yeah? Well, you're a self-centered tedious neurotic whose attempts at writing are the literary equivalent of Valium.
