Tom McClure - Susan Dow @ 11am

Jim Ruggles - Ursula Hawkins @ 10am

Al Lieb - Jan McNamara vs. Josh Barnett - Roz Smyth @ 8am

Denny Bean - Kersti Garthwaite @ 10am

Don WIlson - Sandi Kean vs. Mike Wiley - [Vickie Mercer - playing twice] @ 8am

The format will be double elimination, as 18 was too odd a number of teams for a round robin. The new round robin format requires groups of 8 people, and it is rare we can get such even-numbered turnouts. Vickie Mercer has volunteered to run next year's tournaments and will assist in the remaining 2 tournaments this season. As this is still "the season", it is a good idea to make reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 6:00 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef at Borrego Physical Therapy - where the draw will going on from 6:30pm to 9pm on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, phone 760-767-4047 or e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday afternoon before the tournament by 6pm(definitely before 7:30 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday, possibly as early as 8:00 a.m. After 9pm on the Friday before the tournament, Jef will try to upload the draw (including partners, start times, and opponents) to our website at www.borregotennis.com and click the tournament date. If you want us to call you with the start time, and don't have internet access, add your phone number with your name when you sign up, or, preferably, arrange to have someone you know check and contact you. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

APRIL BANQUET
Our annual banquet will be held Saturday, April 14, at 7:00 pm. Assaggio's will be providing the food and the menu is as follows:
Salad and Garlic Bread
Chicken Parmesan
Pasta with Meatballs
Vegetable Linguini with Marinara Sauce
We will also be providing dessert. Please bring the beverage of your choice.

The total cost is $18.00 per person (including tax) and all money must be in to Susan Flores-Dow no later than APRIL 2. NO RESERVATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THAT DATE. You may pay at the March tournament. Make checks payable to BSTC ( not Susan). If you do not plan to be at the March tournament, you may mail your checks to Susan at: 914 Steele Drive, Brea, CA 92821 Cell: 714 350-3910 Be sure to mail in time for the cut-off date. You may want to call Susan to let her know your "check is in the mail" so she'll be expecting it.

For those who are new to the club, our annual banquet is always catered instead of our usual potluck dinners.

We look forward to seeing all of you and having a fun evening.

JUMP START TOURNAMENT MARCH 16 - 18
Members of this tennis club are welcome to participate in "the Jump Start Tournament" over the weekend of March 16-18. This is a fundraiser for a defibrillator for the tennis center. The life it saves could be your own! Interest is already high as the format guarantees play on all three days of the tournament and brackets are filling, so if you want to participate, please return the application as soon as possible - application will have been sent to all members of the tennis club by now.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards will be made in all brackets, snacks will be served each day and dinner on Saturday night is included.

The latter part of March is one of the best times to visit Borrego Springs. Perfect weather is *almost* guaranteed and we are looking forward to a good wildflower bloom around the time of the tournament. The weekend of the tournament is also the same weekend as the Circle of Art Show, a free art show and sale with over 70 artists, including oil and watercolors, photography, sculpture, ceramics, pottery, weaving, jewelry and more, all on display in Christmas Circle Park in the heart of Borrego Springs.

With all the wonderful activities scheduled that weekend, hotels and motels will fill up quickly so we suggest making your room reservations now.

We look forward to seeing you there!

JUMP START TOURNAMENT UPDATE
Hi all,

Just a quick update on the Jump Start Tournament, March 16-18. We have a good time planned with lots of tennis every day and the Saturday night dinner will be at a local restaurant with some great music by our own Sheldon Baker and his group, Shakin'. We heard them play in December and they had everyone either on their feet or at very least tapping their toes. Sheldon says with Mike Virgil doing vocals and Ptrak on drums a splendid time is guaranteed for all (to borrow a phrase from the Beatles). And Nancy Shoemaker has agreed to do a guest appearance with Shakin' and sing a few special songs for us.

Everyone who has paid is in the tourney. We currently have 24 women and only 10 men signed up, so I am opening up another bracket for women. I can do that and still accommodate more men, but you guys need to contact me to confirm your space. It's going to be a great time and we don't want anyone to be left out, so please let me know ASAP if you want to participate. I can email you another application if you need one, or you can just call or email me to let me know you want to play, and then mail a check to the address below to reserve your place in the tournament.

Looking forward to seeing lots of friends, having a lot of fun, and playing and watching some good tennis !

Warmest regards,

Harold

SAD NEWS

Jeff Marxen won his division with mixed-doubles partner Harriet Lisak in October 2010

Jeff, a native of Ohio, was 60 and left behind 3 children (Philip, Jeffrey Christopher, and Marissa) his wife, Annette, and stepsons (Sean and Todd). Jeff was a well-respected orthopaedic surgeon at Sharp Grossmont - specializing in joint replacements and repairs, who was proud to have just recently performed his first robotic joint replacement surgery after 32 years in his practice.

It saddens me to tell you that Jeff Marxen was killed when he hit a curb while riding his motorcycle this past Thursday evening (February 23, 2012).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 3rd, at 1:00 pm at Shadow Mountain Community Church, 2100 Greenfield Drive, El Cajon 92019.

A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service. Our Borrego Springs Tennis Club will make a donation to the Rotary Club, an organization near and dear to Jeff, where he has been a devoted member, even serving as president at one time. Please remember Annette and their children in your thoughts and prayers. If you wish to send a card, the address is:

13004 Brixton Pl., San Diego, CA 92130

CLUB FEES
Apparently the board does not believe that last suggestion (which would effectively end membership in favor of moving what amounts to membership fees into tournament fees) would work for the club, and who knows, maybe they're right. They are still considering a compromise solution: an reduced membership fee for those who can only come to a limited number of tournaments.

It is uncertain if the snowbird discount will be continued. This discount is applied to those who live over 150 miles away, and not only side-steps membership fees, but also does not compensate for this and fees collected are pretty small.

SATURDAY HAPPY HOUR/POTLUCK
Our usual happy hour will be at 6:30pm Saturday, followed by the potluck at 7pm. If you have any gifts for door prizes, put them in the designated door prize area.

BORREGO NEWS
For those who missed the February tournament, we had near perfect weather - sun and little wind on Saturday, highs in the 70s, and partly cloudy with some wind, but pleasant temperatures on Sunday.

Since then, San Diego County had a good storm with lots of snow in the mountains and rain in the desert. Snow levels reached down to about 2000' and roads were closed in the mountains on the night of February 27. Jef and Kathy, coming home from San Diego that night, barely made it thru the blizzard, with only partial traction getting over the final hump (the lowest pass in the area - Teofulio Pass, elevation 3636'). Visibility was poor at times(maybe 50') with heavy snowfall. 30 miles of snow and 20 miles of icy roads had to be traversed by them that night.

FEBRUARY 2012 STRAIGHT DOUBLES TOURNAMENT
A good turnout of 43 participated in this tournament. As there were 19 men and 24 women, it was decided to play a 2 short (8 person) round robins, a standard-size (16 person) round robin, and a 12-person double elimination tournament.

Unfortuneately, Jef did not post the rules for determining who goes on to the playoffs, and only 1 of the 3 playoffs appears to have been done correctly. (the women's small round robin group was done right). The correct matchings should have been:

Women's Large Round Robin group 1: #1 Sue Ammons - #2 Barbara Ash vs. #2 Harriet Lisak - #1 Michel Miller ACTUAL: Michelle - Marla vs. Concha Vicky

Women's Large Round Robin group 2: #1 Kersti Garthwait - #2 Laurel Van Gilder vs. #2 Eileen Childress (or Vickie Mercer if only games are counted) - #1 Concha Rivera ACTUAL: Laurel - Sandi K vs. Barbara - Kersti

Men's Round Robin: With a 3 way tie for the 2nd 4, a coin toss or tiebreaker should have been played between Borden, Dick Miller and Harold Larson. Let's say #1 was A and #2 was B. Also there was a 3 way tie for 2nd for the 1st 4 between Don Wilson, Bill Hanson & Gary McNamara. Let's say that after a playoff or coin toss, C is in 2nd place. Then the finals would be: #1 Ed Ghiorso - #2 B vs. #2 C - #1 A. ACTUAL: Ed - Borden vs. Harold - Denny

The rules are this: the top 2 finishers in each group of 4 pair with the top 2 finishers in the other group of 4 in which they were partnered in the round robin(#1-#2 vs. #2-#1). As to who are the top finishers, let me back up and say that the idea of stopping play when someone reaches 8 games is wrong, as this gives whoever serves first an advantage. Winning the match (or set in this case) is the most important thing in tennis. The number of games won should only be secondary to the number of sets won, and so the usual first to 8 BY 2 - tiebreaker on 8-8 wins the match.

Mike Shoemaker was about the 3rd name drawn for the $50 drawing, as others were not present or didn't claim prize. Congratulations, Mike!

Wise Kids explain things for Mother's Day
Why did God make mothers?
  1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
  2. Mostly to clean the house.
  3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.
How did God make mothers?
  1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
  2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
  3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.
What ingredients are mothers made of?
  1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
  2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string I think.
Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
  1. We're related.
  2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.
What kind of little girl was your mom?
  1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.
  2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.
  3. They say she used to be nice.
What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?
  1. His last name.
  2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer? Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores.
Why did your mom marry your dad?
  1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.
  2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
  3. My grandma says that mom didn't have her thinking cap on.
Who's the boss at your house?
  1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goofball
  2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.
  3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.
What's the difference between moms and dads?
  1. Moms work at work and work at home, and dads just go to work at work.
  2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
  3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend's.
What does your mom do in her spare time?
  1. Mothers don't do spare time.
  2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.
What would it take to make your mom perfect?
  1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.
  2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.
If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?
  1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
  2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.
