The format will either be the usual double elimination format or a round robin similar to the January tournament (suggested by tennis pro Harold Maier). As this is still "the season", it is a good idea to make reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 6:00 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef at Borrego Physical Therapy - where the draw will going on from 6:30pm to 9pm on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, phone 760-767-4047 or e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday afternoon before the tournament by 6pm(definitely before 7:30 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday, possibly as early as 8:00 a.m. After 9pm on the Friday before the tournament, Jef will try to upload the draw (including partners, start times, and opponents) to our website at www.borregotennis.com and click the tournament date. If you want us to call you with the start time, and don't have internet access, add your phone number with your name when you sign up, or, preferably, arrange to have someone you know check and contact you. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

A MESSAGE FROM MARILYN
For those of you who weren't at the January tournament, here is an update on a couple items. Ursula Hawkins donated a beautiful quilt for a raffle. The three Yorba Linda lovelies, Marla, Barbara and Sandi, managed to sell lots of tickets for a total of $126 to the club. Thanks, gals. We can always count on you to bring in the $$$$$. And a "big" thank you to Ursula for her talent, kindness and generosity. You are a true winner in every sense.

We are fortunate to have Barbara Ash as our new Treasurer. Barbara is a long-time tax preparer and, needless to say, very qualified. Thanks, Barbara.

And here's what you've all been waiting to hear.......The Dows will be back and Fred plans to prepare lunch on Saturday. I think it's going to be Italian. Grazie, Chef Boyardow!

See you all in Borrego and drive safely.

Marilyn

JUMP START TOURNAMENT MARCH 16 - 18
Members of this tennis club are welcome to participate in "the Jump Start Tournament" over the weekend of March 16-18. This is a fundraiser for a defibrillator for the tennis center. The life it saves could be your own! Interest is already high as the format guarantees play on all three days of the tournament and brackets are filling, so if you want to participate, please return the application as soon as possible - application will have been sent to all members of the tennis club by now.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards will be made in all brackets, snacks will be served each day and dinner on Saturday night is included.

The latter part of March is one of the best times to visit Borrego Springs. Perfect weather is *almost* guaranteed and we are looking forward to a good wildflower bloom around the time of the tournament. The weekend of the tournament is also the same weekend as the Circle of Art Show, a free art show and sale with over 70 artists, including oil and watercolors, photography, sculpture, ceramics, pottery, weaving, jewelry and more, all on display in Christmas Circle Park in the heart of Borrego Springs.

With all the wonderful activities scheduled that weekend, hotels and motels will fill up quickly so we suggest making your room reservations now.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Harold & Sheila - Sandi & Borden

EDITORIAL OF CLUB FEES
Apparently there is still some confusion on this: 1) Ken seems to think it is set up so that once you were a member, you have to pay the full membership each year you show up -- no pro-rating (that is only for first time members). 2) Marilyn acknowledged that there is still a snowbird discount where people who live 150 miles away don't have to join if they only play 3 tournaments, and only pay $10, $15, and $15 for these. It was previously suggested, but not approved that this be $10, $15, $25.

Jef recommends these complicated (and some say unfair rates) should be done away with next year, if only to simplify JaNell's job -- JaNell gets no compensation for this tedious and somewhat difficult job. She currently has to determine where everyone lives and when/if they have played before AND when/if they were ever a member BEFORE coming up with a fee to charge. My proposal would be to have something like this simple form for the fee collector:

Name
Fee for player
Fee for visitor
1st time
$10
$5
Tourn 1
$40
$20
Tourn 2
$35
$18
Tourn 3
$25
$12
Tourn 4
$20
$10
Tourn 5
$10
$5
Tourn 6
$5
$2
Name 1_________________________________________________
Name 2_________________________________________________
................................................._________________________________________________
Last name_________________________________________________

Tourn 1,2,...6 correspond to the tournaments that a person attended, and not to the 6 tournaments of the tennis club. For example, if a person attended the 2nd and 5th club tournaments, then only Tourn 1 and Tourn 2 columns would be used, as those were tournament #1 and #2 for THAT person. Somebody will generate the list at the start of the season, include everyone who participated in the past (say 3 years) and put an X in their first column. If someone isn't on the list, give them the benefit of the doubt, and this is their first time, and so they get the discounted first visit rate. JaNell would simply look at the first blank column for that person, determine the rate (at the top of the column) -- depending on whether a person was visiting or playing, write the appropriate number in that column, and circle it after the fee was collected.

This format addresses the problem (pointed out by Ken) that something like the $75 membership is needed for the club to be solvent (cover expenses), but in the above model, the membership is built into the fee structure: half a membership fee is obtained in the first tournament, and by the 2nd tournament, a full membership fee is obtained. However, for those who only play in 1 or 2 tournaments per year, they would pay less than they do now. The rates drop with each tournament in which a player participates and by the 6th tournament, the same fees come into the club as the current model. Many people who would otherwise play in 1 or 2 tournaments each year would not be put off by the large price tag, more people would probably participate, and the club would probably get more income. Those who come only once per year would not feel cheated by having to pay $85 as in the current model. There would be no snowbird discount, as the rates for 1 to 3 tournaments would still be affordable for nearly everyone.

SATURDAY HAPPY HOUR/POTLUCK
Our usual happy hour will be at 6:30pm Saturday, followed by the potluck at 7pm. If you have any gifts for door prizes, put them in the designated door prize area.

BORREGO NEWS
For those who missed the January tournament, we had near perfect weather. However, a week after the tournament, the strongest winds in, perhaps, decades hit the valley. A cinder block wall was knocked down at Jef and Kathy's house, as a probably super-charged dust devil (amid ambient winds of hurricane category I strength - 75mph) passed by their house. About 8 major branches of 3 nearby trees were broken. A weather station next door recorded winds exceeded 100mph (the maximum speed measurable with his anemometer). The 8 solid hours of winds in the 70mph range caused damage on a number of buildings in the valley. Weather subsequent to this weekend was very pleasant, however.

SANDI'S CLINIC & TOURNAMENT
Jef wrote this a few weeks after the facts, and has forgotten some names - sorry!

Sandi threw another great 4 day party over the first weekend in January this year. Neither of the Jensens could come to the clinic, as they were visiting their ailing father, but tennis pros Gretchen Majers and Lee W. (Whittingham or something?) were there again, along with 2 other good tennis pros. They did a nice exhibition match between morning and afternoon sessions.

At the awards ceremony, a reporter for the local paper, the Borrego Sun, took pictures, gather information, and a full page article on Sandi's tournament appeared in the next edition of the paper. The winners of the top 2 divisions played an exhibition mixed doubles match (#1 man Tim Hofnagle + #2 woman) vs. (#2 man Tom McClure + #1 woman Ursula Hawkins). Tom and Ursula won 6-2.

JANUARY 2012 HYBRID MIXED DOUBLES TOURNAMENT
A good turnout of 46 participated in this tournament, however, there were 6 more women than men, so it was decided to have 4 men play a round robin STRAIGHT doubles tournament, and 12 women play a round robin STRAIGHT doubles tournament. The top 2 players in each of these groups combined to play a MIXED doubles final on Sunday. The other 16 men and 16 women played a mixed doubles round robin as described below: In the January tournament, the pairing scheme used was flawed(most everyone faced the same opponent more than once), but Jef just did a better design (see table below). Due to popular support, we may use a similar format for the next straight doubles tournament (see NEW ROUND ROBIN section below).

NEW ROUND ROBIN FORMAT

When there is a block of 16 players of similar abilities, the following format makes for very competitive tennis: The following assumes the list of players is ordered in estimated abilities: Mixed: break men's list into 2 groups of 4 each and the women's into 2 groups of 4 each. The top 4 men and bottom 4 women play one round robin and the bottom 4 men and top 4 women play another. Straight: break the list into groups of 4: top 4 men and bottom 4 men play 1 round robin and the 2 middle groups of 4 play another round robin.

Determine the top 3 players in in each group of 4 A, B, C and D. When 4 courts are available at a time, all matches can be done at the same time. Allow 1-2 hours between matches, and finish all round robin matches on the first day, play a semifinals the next morning, and a finals after that.

Each player in each 4-person group will play 3 matches with a different partner against different players. Teams will be made from different groups AB and CD. The table below shows a scheme for such pairings for AB (Jef took a few hours before finally came upon something that looks like it works):

ROUND ROBIN 1
MATCH 1 MIXEDSTRAIGHTMATCH 2 MIXEDSTRAIGHTMATCH 3 MIXEDSTRAIGHT
m1-w8 v m2-w7 or 1-16 v 2-15m1-w7 v m3-w5 or 1-15 v 3-13m1-w5 v m4-m8 or 1-13 v 4-16
m2-w7 v m1-w8 or 2-15 v 1-16m2-w8 v m4-w6 or 2-16 v 4-14m2-w6 v m3-w7 or 2-14 v 3-15
m3-w6 v m4-w5 or 3-14 v 4-13m3-w5 v m1-w7 or 3-13 v 1-15m3-w7 v m2-w6 or 3-15 v 2-14
m4-w5 v m3-w6 or 4-13 v 3-14m4-w6 v m2-w8 or 4-14 v 2-16m4-w8 v m1-w5 or 4-16 v 1-13

ROUND ROBIN 2
MATCH 1 MIXEDSTRAIGHTMATCH 2 MIXEDSTRAIGHTMATCH 3 MIXEDSTRAIGHT
m5-w4 v m6-w3 or 5-12 v 6-11m5-w3 v m7-w1 or 5-11 v 7-9m5-w1 v m8-w4 or 5-9 v 8-12
m6-w3 v m5-w4 or 6-11 v 5-12m6-w4 v m8-w4 or 6-12 v 8-10m6-w2 v m7-w3 or 6-10 v 7-11
m7-w2 v m8-w1 or 7-10 v 8-9m7-w1 v m5-w3 or 7-9 v 5-11m7-w3 v m6-w2 or 7-11 v 6-10
m8-w1 v m7-w2 or 8-9 v 7-10m8-w2 v m6-w4 or 8-10 v 6-12m8-w4 v m5-w1 or 8-12 v 5-9

With this round robin, no players are partnered more than once and no players are opposed more than once.

SEMIFINALS: The top 2 players in each group of 4 in the round robins will play in a semi-final match. The #2 in the first group of 4 will team with the #1 in the 2nd group of 4 and play against #1 and #2 in the groups. For example in mixed doubles, #1 man in round robin teams with #2 woman and plays against #2 man and #1 woman.

FINALS: the winners of each semi-finals match play the winning team of the other semi-finals.

WHAT IF THERE ARE ONLY 7 players instead of 8?: Then break the list into 2 groups 4 and 3 (in mixed doubles, if there are 4 men, 3 women, this is the split), and play the following round robin (where the 3 play 4 matches and the 4 play 3):

7-PERSON ROUND ROBIN
The following 6 matches can only be played 1 at a time, so some players play twice in a row - only 1 court would be used, and can fit in 3 2-hour gaps between above format (when only 1 such group of 16 exists - otherwise there will need to be early starts on EACH day)
1-7 v 4-6 1-6 v 3-5 1-5 v 2-7
4-6 v 1-7 4-5 v 2-6 4-7 v 3-6
2-5 v 3-7 2-6 v 4-5 2-7 v 1-5
3-7 v 2-5 3-5 v 1-6 3-6 v 4-7

These types of round robins with 6 players are unbalanced, as there are 9 possible combinations and that means there is no way to not have a team play twice.

Conventional round robins can be played with 4 or 5 players.

Short stories

  • Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea."

  • Three friends from the local congregation were asked "When you're In your casket, and friends and congregation members are mourning over you, what would you like them to say?? Artie said: "I would like them to say I was a wonderful husband, a fine spiritual leader, and a great family man." Eugene commented: "I would like them to say I was a wonderful teacher and servant of God who made a huge difference in people's lives." Don said: "I'd like them to say, "Look, he's moving!"

  • Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God. Looking up, he asks the Lord "God, what does a million years mean to you?" The Lord replies, "A minute." Smith asks, "And what does a million dollars mean to you?" The Lord replies, "A penny." Smith asks," Can I have a penny?" The Lord replies, "In a minute".

  • John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully. "Give me one last request, dear," he said. "Of course, John, " his wife said softly. "Six months after I die," he said, "I want you to marry Bob." "But I thought you hated Bob," she said. With his last breath John said, "I do!

  • A man picks up a young woman in a bar and convinces her to come back to his hotel. When they are relaxing afterwards, he asks, "Am I the first man you ever made love to?" She looks at him thoughtfully for a second before replying. "You might be," she says. "Your face looks familiar.?

  • A man goes to see the Rabbi. "Rabbi, something terrible is happening and I have to talk to you about it." The Rabbi asked, "What's wrong?" The man replied, "My wife is poisoning me." The Rabbi, very surprised by this, asks, "How can that be?" The man then pleads, "I'm telling you, I'm certain she's poisoning me, what should I do?" The Rabbi then offers, "Tell you what. Let me talk to her, I'll see what I can find out and I'll let you know." A week later the Rabbi calls the man and says, "Well, I spoke to your wife. I spoke to her on the phone for three hours. You want my advice?" The man said yes and the Rabbi replied, "Take the poison!
