Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef, phone 760-767-4536 or e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday afternoon before the tournament (definitely before 6 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday, possibly as early as 8:00 a.m. After 9pm on the Friday before the tournament, Jef will try to upload the draw (including partners, start times, and opponents) to our website at www.borregotennis.com and click the tournament date. If you want us to call you with the start time, and don't have internet access, add your phone number with your name when you sign up, or, preferably, arrange to have someone you know check and contact you. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY HAPPY HOUR/POTLUCK
Our usual happy hour will be at 6:30pm Saturday, followed by the potluck at 7pm. If you have any gifts for door prizes, put them in the designated door prize area.

BORREGO NEWS
We got lucky getting the tournament in over the Halloween weekend, as Borrego got deluged with rain the following weekend. So far, it's looking like a good wildflower year in 2012.

OCTOBER 2011 TOURNAMENT
Only 22 people signed up for this tournament due to various reasons: 1) some snowbirds still haven't landed in Borrego, 2) some of us are still travelling, 3) some of us were in ill health - mostly due to a flu circulating in California now, and 4) a few have actually dropped out, due to not getting good pairings in previous tournament draws. But due to the low turnout, the tournament organizers opted for a round robin format, which allowed everyone to play an average of 5 matches! Normally, the average person plays only 3 or 4 matches. With temperatures exceeding 90°F on Saturday, this was verging on too much tennis for some.

A highlight of the weekend was a costume contest and unique scavenger hunt organized by Peg Lieb Saturday night after the potluck. With all lights off, all the participants were handed a list of objects that were placed on courts 3 and 4 and camoflaged. The object was to find as many of these and record where they were hidden. Sandi and Curt won this contest, finding 18 of 20.

Costume contestants:

L to R: Ursula (spider dress), Al (Mr. Spock), Harriet L (wizard), Peg (witch), Roz (dark temptress), Kersti (authentic viking), Janna (horned viking), Ken (street rapper)

Winner is Kersti with long braided blonde hair!

Emcee Peg ran the whole show!
Kersti barely edged out the field in the costume contest. The dinner was excellent, and there was a lot of it! Noone went hungry at the potluck. It was very dark on the courts afterwards as about 8 2-man teams searched for Peg's hidden items. Sandi and Curt found 18 of the 20.

QUESTIONS THAT HAUNT!
  • If you have sex with a prostitute against her will, is it considered rape or shoplifting?
  • How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?
  • Why do you have to 'put your two cents in'.. but it's only a 'penny for your thoughts'? Where's that extra penny going to?
  • Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
  • What disease did cured ham actually have?
  • How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?
  • Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up like every two hours?
  • If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?
  • Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?
  • Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?
  • Why is 'bra' singular and 'panties' plural?
  • Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?
  • If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?
  • Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs!
  • If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?
  • If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?
  • Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?
  • Why did you just try singing the two songs above?
  • Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your butt?
  • Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?
  • Why, Why, Why???
