Al Lieb & Peg Lieb @9am
Ken Shallahamer & Roz Smyth @9am

Curt Hawkins & Kersti Garthwaite @9am
Don Wilson & Vickie Mercer @9am
Borden Granger & Bonnie Wilson @9am
Denny Bean & Jackie Shallahamer @9am

The format has been changed to a Round Robin, due to a low turnout. As this is a big weekend in Borrego (the weekend after Borrego Days), it is a good idea to make reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 6:00 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef, phone 760-767-4536 or e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday afternoon before the tournament (definitely before 6 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday, possibly as early as 8:00 a.m. After 9pm on the Friday before the tournament, Jef will try to upload the draw (including partners, start times, and opponents) to our website at www.borregotennis.com and click the tournament date. If you want us to call you with the start time, and don't have internet access, add your phone number with your name when you sign up, or, preferably, arrange to have someone you know check and contact you. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY HAPPY HOUR/POTLUCK
Emcees: Peg Lieb - events coordinator, decorator, Marilyn Bean - announcer. According to Peg:

the October Borrego Tennis Club Saturday night activities will be Halloween oriented. Peg has already procured massive decorations and has a new surprise fun main event (requiring participants each have a flashlight) which will last approximately 20 minutes.

  1. Costumes optional - prize awarded (sorry they were out of the black Mercedes)
  2. Please each of you, bring a flashlight (not a huge lantern though). We wll be having an event after dinner in the dark unless it rains.
  3. Please do not wear black soled shoes or high heels to the Saturday night dinner as the activity after dinner will partially be on the tennis courts and we don't want to injure the courts.

Our usual happy hour will be at 6:30pm Saturday, followed by the potluck at 7pm. If you have any gifts for door prizes, put them in the designated door prize area.

SAN CLEMENTE
Marla reports: We had a great time in San Clemente. Saturday there were about 18 people from Borrego group, taking up three courts and trading off, somewhat. Most had come for the day, only. Roz met Barbara, Sandi and I for our clam chowder at the pier Saturday evening and we had a brilliant sunset and lots of surfers in the water. No Fog!

Kirsti attended Saturday and was camping with her family so she met us at the courts on Sunday morning and the four of us played two sets.

We stayed at the Double Tree @ Dana Point so had a bit more of a drive than previous years when we stayed at the Hampton Inn in S.C. but, it was nice and we enjoyed the weekend.

BORREGO NEWS
Just a couple hours after the tournament concluded, the winds picked up a cool front reduced high temperatures in the 90s down to the low 80s for the rest of the week. The warm weekend was the exception to a generally cool April, but the lack of wind enabled the banquet to go without a hitch on Saturday April 16th.

Temperatures were cooler than average thru July this summer, but August and September were hotter than normal.

The chamber of commerce fooled some of us this time by starting Borrego Days a week early. This unexpected turn of events puts our tournament a week after the kickoff of the Borrego season. The advantage is that it won't be too busy around town. The disadvantage is most of us will miss the festivities -- such as the parade, which will feature sky-diving and aerobatics this year. It will be the first Borrego Days that will be sub-contracted to an event specialist, so we don't know how well it will turn out.

MESSAGE FROM FRED DOW
As most of you know, Fred had to cancel attending the banquet due to doctor's orders.

Dear BSTC Members,

Thank You so much for your get well wishes, prayers, card, and the surprise phone call. All of them were greatly appreciated. I can’t believe I missed being out there with all our great friends and gave up an opportunity to lovingly hit fuzzy round things at you. Please have a safe, enjoyable, and fulfilling summer. Remember to use every day to the fullest if you can. God only blessed us with a certain amount of them.
Your Friends, Fred & Susan

Fred also wanted this to be included in this newsletter:

The following article was written by a contributing writer to the OC Register in Mar. 2010. I’d ask you to remember it to your friends.
Thank You, Fred

Article Deep Vein Thrombosis is a potentially fatal blood clot that forms in the deep vein system of the lower leg.

It can occur from sitting in the same position for an extended period of time.

More than 2 million Americans develop DVT each year – which can cause pulmonary embolism and may even lead to death.

Dr. John Mauriello, president-elect of the American College of Phlebology, calls it "a silent killer among us."

Q. Do we take DVT seriously?
A. It is a disease that the population in general needs to take more seriously. For many, this illness can strike without warning because the symptoms are difficult to detect or thought of as minor leg pain and ignored. We estimate as many as 300,000 Americans die each year from DVT-related pulmonary thrombosis – which is more than AIDS and breast cancer combined. It's like wiping out a small city.

Q. Who are the most likely victims?
A. Most victims are older, obese or pregnant but it can strike anyone. Anyone whose job or personal interests require a great deal of long distance travel in cramped seats should take precautions. Driving in a car over a long period of time can cause the problem because you don't want to stop. And people tend to get dehydrated.

Q. OK. So I have soreness in my calf and think I have to stretch but it could be DVT?
A. We really don't know without an ultra-sound and if it is high in the leg it can go into your lung and kill you.

Q. Solutions?
A. Wear compression stockings. That's number one. Stay well-hydrated. Try to get up and move as much as you can. They don't like you walking up and down airline aisles but at least you can stand up and do some toe raises or march in place. And avoid alcohol as it dehydrates you.

Q. I had a DVT once and my foot got swollen. I called it "economy class syndrome" because I had flown so long.
A. Actually, we used to call it "first class syndrome" because people in first class drink free alcohol, get dehydrated and are more likely to have the problem. Remember, a lot of people have both feet swell and that doesn't mean a blood clot. Just water retention. But one foot or one leg means something is going on.

Q. What do you do before you fly to prevent these clots?
A. I take a baby aspirin. I like to thin my blood as much as possible when I fly.

Q. You say this can be genetic?
A. Yes, you should have your blood checked for coagulants.

Q. Is there a web site for additional information?
A. Check PreventDVT.org. And remember to wear your compression hose.

APRIL 2011 TOURNAMENT

Joanne won the $100 drawing for those who played in all tournaments this season. Here she is earlier that evening.

... and the next day, as treasurer of the club, getting half that amount ready to give to the next drawing winner

Gary & Rachel's grandson, Joe, presenting prize to Don Wilson who won the $50 drawing, congratulations Don!

Those remaining for award ceremony on Sunday

Jef was having camera troubles at the time, but thinks Vicki Mercer may have won the drawing for a free membership.

We had calm, but fairly warm weather for our April tournament. We had a the highest turnout of the season with 52 participants. Harold's Harem (Sandi Kean, Marla, Barbara Ash) put on 2 fundraisers: a drawing for a year's membership and an auction of some special old-tyme tennis racquets. These generated over $600 for the club. Thanks, girls!
