The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday, as early as 8:00 a.m. After 9pm on the Friday before the tournament, Jef will try to upload the draw (including partners, start times, and opponents) to our website at www.borregotennis.com and click the tournament date. If you want us to call you with the start time, and don't have internet access, add your phone number with your name when you sign up, or, preferably, arrange to have someone you know check and contact you. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK / HAPPY HOUR
As usual, we will have our potluck on the first day, Saturday, of the tournament. Happy hour starts at 6:30 p.m. and dining starts about 7 p.m. It would help the club if you could please bring your own place settings. If you have door prizes to give away, put them in the "door prize area" before the dinner.

IDEAS FOR TOURNAMENT AWARDS
Gary McNamara wants to remind the members that ideas are needed for tournament awards. If you have any ideas, please send them to Gary at porsche86@att.net.

BORREGO NEWS
Like most of the nation, on Ground Hogs Day, we were chilled by the big arctic front. The high that day was only 50°F, and lows were in the mid-to-high 20's for the next 3 nights. Weather recovered and we have enjoyed some great weather since the last tournament. Some wildflowers are coming out, and we should have some colour for the next 3 tournaments, altho it will be somewhat muted by the plague of the Sahara mustard.

JANUARY 2011 TOURNAMENT

Peg Lieb won the $50 drawing!
Congratulations, Peg!

Great weather accompanied this mixed doubles tournament. Jef had an important meeting in San Diego, and so had to miss Sunday, and noone has provided any other details, other than these pictures from the Sunday award ceremony. Gary McNamara seems to have made a couple errors on contestants, so Jef tried fixing them.

Annette provided the content of a skit they did at the potluck on Saturday:

Grandpa Marxen’s Top 10 List for Playing Better Tennis

  • #10) If you want to have fun, you’ve got to “Put it in!”
  • #9) If you want to have more fun, you’ve got to “Keep it in longer!”
  • #8) Establishing a smooth even tempo with your strokes on any surface will lead to “greater pleasure.”
  • #7) A good follow-through with each stroke will ultimately give you “greater satisfaction.”
  • #6) If you’re having trouble with consistency in stroke production always remember to just “Drive it down the middle.”
  • #5) No matter how many synthetic sticks (Grandpa used to refer to tennis racquets as “sticks”) they design, “Nothing will ever take the place of a good woodie.”
  • #4) There are all sorts of techniques for serving, but the most important thing to remember is to “Get it in the box!”
  • #3) In volleying, always “Put both hands on your stick for control.”
  • #2) Never forget in volleying that forward thrust is most important in achieving the ultimate goal of getting it in “Hard and Deep.”
  • #1) If a man is going to play with a woman, he should always remember that, “Women take longer to warm up!”

Coincidences

A man went into a local tavern and took a seat at the bar next to a female patron. He turned to her and said, "This is a special day, I'm celebrating."

"What a coincidence," said the woman, "I'm celebrating too". She clinked glasses with him and said, "What are you celebrating?"

"I'm a chicken farmer," he replied. "For months all my hens were infertile, but today they're finally fertile."

"What a coincidence," the woman said. "My husband and I have been trying to have a child. Today, my gynecologist told me I'm pregnant.

How did your chickens become fertile?" she asked.

"I switched cocks." he replied.

"What a coincidence!!", she said.
