Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

TREASURER'S REPORT
The Borrego Springs Tennis Club has a robust membership, thanks to the addition of local Borregans joining the club as well as new members that have been guests of our long time players that have also joined. We now have a total of 65 members. There were 48 players in the December tournament. At the December 2010 tournament we received 6 renewals, 4 brand new (full) memberships and three social memberships. We would like to welcome Bryan Worthington, Nine' Hanson, Teresa San Felippo, and Vickie Mercer to our club. We are pleased to welcome Steve SanFellipo, Gary Mercer and Tom Freed as social members.

Thanks to the help of Fred and Susan Dow for making lunch and Ursula Hawkins for contributing the quilt we were able to build our treasury for future purchasing of tournament prizes. To sum up, the BSTC is going in a positive direction due to the dedication of its members.

Respectfully, Joanne Cohen Treasurer

SATURDAY POTLUCK / HAPPY HOUR
As usual, we will have our potluck on the first day, Saturday, of the tournament. Happy hour starts at 6:30 p.m. and dining starts about 7 p.m. It would help the club if you could please bring your own place settings. If you have door prizes to give away, put them in the "door prize area" before the dinner.

DOUBLES IN THE DESERT CLINIC AND TOURNAMENT
Beautiful weather accompanied Sandi Granger's "Doubles in the Desert" tournament this year. The clinic was on January 6, 2011, and the tournament followed on the next 3 days.

COMAN TIE-BREAKER
Instead of the normal tie-breaker, it was voted at the end of the December tournament to change all 12-point tie-breakers to the "Coman" style:

The Coman Tiebreak is no different than a regular tiebreaker, except that players switch ends after one point, and then every four points thereafter. This assures that a server in doubles will serve on the same side that he/she has been serving on for the whole set. It also eliminates a six-point swing (in singles or doubles) if the conditions favor a specific side (due to strong wind or difficult sun conditions).

BORREGO NEWS
Lots of extreme weather was experienced here since the last tournament, including several rains and freezing cold spells, similar to the rest of the state. The result of freezing temperatures around Thanksgiving caused fall colours in the various ocotillo forests here in the days after the last tournament. This is very unusual (to have heavy rains before severe cold hits the valley). Freezing weather also occurred between Christmas and New Years Day. The New Years weekend is (along with Thanksgiving), the most popular weekend for off-roaders, and many thousands of RVs were camped in the area and it was moderately crowded in Borrego. The Granger tournament is already full and will occur the weekend before our next tournament, January 6, 7, 8, and 9, 2011.

DECEMBER 2010 TOURNAMENT

Great weather accompanied this straight doubles tournament. Most Borrego businesses has "Hot Cocoa for Chilli Nites" this weekend, but nearly all tennis club members were busy with other activities, including the pot luck on Saturday night. Gary McNamara reports:

Saturday's pot luck dinner was a tremendous event hosted by Janna and Larry Wagner. We were fortunate to receive a surprise visit from their cousins, visiting from an unknown southeast location. While Janna and Larry were fixing their cousin's trailer hitch out back, these guest hosts entertained the crowd with stories, words of wisdom, and innumerable jokes all told in a somewhat bewildering accent. Following a delicious dinner and gift exchange, our southern hosts led the club in several songs of the Holidays, including a very topical original ditty. We also had the good fortune to hear Nancy Shoemaker and Ed Ghiorso again. It was a special evening of good friends, good food, and great fun.

Note from our president: Thanks again to Ursula Hawkins who made and donated the beautiful quilt, and to Fred and Susan Dow for their preparation of a wonderful lunch. Their generous contributions and efforts help build our treasury. Thanks also to our members who support the club financially with their purchase of such tickets, etc. Every dollar helps.

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by Yezen on Sep 5, 2001
WHAT IS POLITICS?

SON: Dad, I have to do a special report for school. Can I ask you a question?
FATHER: Sure son, what's the question?
SON: What is politics?
FATHER: Well, let's take our home for example. I am the wage earner, so let's call me management. Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we'll call her government. We take care of your needs, so let's call you the people. We'll call the maid the working class, and your baby brother we will call the future. Do you understand?
SON: I'm not really sure, dad. I'll have to think about it.

That night, awakened by his baby brother's crying, the boy went to see what was wrong. Discovering the baby had seriously soiled his diaper, the boy went to his parents' room and found his mother sound asleep. He then went to the maid's room where, peeking through the key hole, he saw his father in bed with the maid. The boy's knocking went totally unheard by his father and the maid, so the boy returned to his room and went back to bed.

The next morning:

SON: Dad, now I think I understand politics.

FATHER: That's great son. Explain it to me in your own words.
SON: Well, dad, while management is screwing the working class, the government is sound asleep, the people are being completely ignored, and the future is full of shit.
