MARCH 20 - 21, 2010 MIXED DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

The next tournament will be the weekend of March 20 - 21, 2010. As this is "the season", it is a good idea to make reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef, phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY LUNCH
Continuing a tradition started in the last (February) tournament by Fred Dow, Rom Romeo will serve a $5 lunch on Saturday to benefit the tennis club. Clam chowder and crackers/fresh bread will be featured. As many recall, Ron donated some awesome salmon chowder made from leftover salmon from the prior night's banquet last April.

SATURDAY POTLUCK / HAPPY HOUR
As usual, we will have our potluck on the first day, Saturday, of the tournament. Happy hour starts at 6:30 p.m. and dining starts about 7 p.m. If you have door prizes to give away, put them in the "door prize area" before the dinner.

JANELL'S 80th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - APRIL BANQUET
For those who were not at the February tournament, you missed the following announcement:

At the April tournament, we will be celebrating JaNell's 80th birthday on Saturday, April 17th, and she wants to be with all her Borrego friends. We will have entertainment and other surprises. The catered dinner, including beer, wine, soft drinks, a variety of main courses, and dessert, is $15.00 if you pay by April 3rd. After April 3rd, it will be $20.00 and reservations must be in by April 10th. Please make your check payable to Sandi Granger who is dealing directly with the caterer. Her address is: P.O. Box 1017, Borrego Springs, CA 92004.

We will not do the usual door prize gifts that evening since there will be a lot going on. We look forward to seeing everyone on this special occasion. You won't want to miss it!

If you have any questions, call Marilyn at (714) 525-3214, or Sandi at (760) 413-0001.

BORREGO NEWS
The February tournament came off without a hitch, despite some rain Saturday morning and threatening weather on Sunday which brought temperatures down on Monday.

1st ANNUAL WOODY TOURNAMENT

Mike Shoemaker and the Grangers ran the 1st Annual Wood Racquet Tournament at the Anza Borrego Tennis Center on February 27 - 28, 2010. Rain delayed play from the 27th to the 28th, but weather was perfect on the 28th and the tournament went off without a hitch. The 32 participants in the 8 different straight doubles divisions all had a great time. Controversy occurred when an over-sized wood racquet was used. This should not have been an issue, as in the old days, there was no racquet size restrictions. The first rules regarding racquet construction appeared in 1978. Before then, racquets were only limited by existing technology. However, in the transition period to non-wood frames, some racquets used non-wood in wood laminates. These racquets may have been used, and might be more controversial. Most participants used racquets loaned by the Grangers and Gilloons, which were all old-school tennis racquets.

FEBRUARY 2010 TOURNAMENT

Some members didn't come down due to rainy conditions on the coast, but we had a fair turnout of 43 players (24 men and 19 women) for our straight doubles tournament. Saturday turned out to be the best day of the tournament with partly cloudy skies and pleasant temperatures. Sunday was mostly cloudy and had some significant winds. The tournament was completed with no delays. Denny Bean won the $50 drawing, but donated it back to the club. Thanks, Denny!!! Ron Romeo and Sonja McGrath won the drawings for the last 2 free tournaments.

FUTURE TOURNAMENT FORMAT POSSIBILITY (Binary Ladder)
I'm thinking of a new type of round robin tournament:
  1. Do the draw Friday night, estimate the rankings of the teams, and put them in the list ordered in descending rank. This list will be placed in the leftmost column of a scheduling table (see below for idea of what this table will look like).
  2. Round 1 will match up teams in upper part of each division with teams in lower part of each division: IF LOWER RANKED TEAM BEATS UPPER RANKED TEAM, THEY EXCHANGE PLACES IN THE LIST IN NEXT COLUMN
  3. Round 2 will match teams in upper half of upper division with other teams in upper half of that division: WINNERS vs. WINNERS. Teams in lower half of lowest division plays other teams in lower half of lower division: LOSERS vs. LOSERS. Lower half of higher divisions plays upper half of next lower division: LOSERS vs. WINNERS. Again, if a lower-ranked team wins, the 2 teams exchange places in the list: This is the only chance for changing divisions.
  4. Round 3 will again match up teams where upper half of each division plays lower half, but different combinations than round 1. Round 3 is completed on Saturday.
  5. (optional wildcard round) Keep only 6 teams with best record in each division for this and following rounds: #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6. Team #1 and #2 have a bye. Quarterfinals: #3 vs. #5 and #4 vs. #6. Winners go to next round. Others drop out. Winners are the NEW #3, #4. These take place between 8 and 10 on Sunday morning.
  6. Semi-finals: (each division): #1 vs. #3, #2 vs. #4. These take place between 9:15 and 11:15 on Sunday
  7. Winners of prior round play in finals. Finals take place 11:30, 12, and 12:30 on Sunday

We can get 3 matches in for everybody in the round-robin part. Ideally, this format works when the number of teams is either 16 or 24, but can work with some fudging for any number of teams.

We should be able to do this for up to 48 participants, but would be difficult to fudge in mixed when the difference between men and women is more than 1 or 2. Here is an example with 16 teams. Left side of each cell is the row of the opponent, followed by whether team in this cell is playing up or down:

ROUND 1ROUND 2ROUND 3PLAYOFFS
15 down3 down6 downBYE3 SEMI2 FINAL
26 down4 down7 downBYE4 SEMI1 FINAL
37 down1 up8 down5 WILDCARD1 SEMI
48 down2 up5 down6 WILDCARD2 SEMI
51 up9 down4 up3 WILDCARD
62 up10 down1 up4 WILDCARD
73 up11 down2 up
84 up12 down3 up
2nd DIVISION:
913 down5 up14 downBYE11 SEMI10 FINAL
1014 down6 up15 downBYE12 SEMI 9 FINAL
1115 down7 up16 down13 WILDCARD9 SEMI
1216 down8 up13 down14 WILDCARD10 SEMI
139 up15 down12 up11 WILDCARD
1410 up16 down9 up12 WILDCARD
1511 up13 up10 up
1612 up14 up11 up

This format requires a TOURNAMENT SITE MANAGER. He will move teams to next column in the schedule. For each round, the team checks where it is in the schedule (courts and times will be pre-assigned). The opponent will be the team in that column corresponding to the row number in the left of that cell (see table above). In the round robin part of tournament, if a higher ranked team wins, it continues on same row into next column. If it loses, it exchanges rows with the winning team in the next column. After the round robin, the tournament director will move the 6 teams with the highest scores in the 6 highest rows in each division (see table above). After each round following the wildcard round, the surviving teams of this single elimination part of tournament take the highest rows, until only 2 remain. The winner is circled after the final match.

Representatives of each match can write the scores of each match on the schedule sheet, but a site manager will be needed to transfer teams and running-scores to next round. The score for each match is a follows: if the team won, 9. If the team lost: the number of games it won (can be anywhere from 0 to 8). The site manager will determine who continues on Sunday in case of ties (using whatever information is available at the time -- if still tied, he may supervise a short playoff).

As the following information must be in EACH cell of the schedule table, the round robin and play-off sections should probably be on different sheets of paper:

  1. Next match opponent (index in list)
  2. Team name (i.e. Joe and Sally might be a team)
  3. Court# and time
  4. Score of match after played
  5. Running score of that team

A 4th round could be added on Saturday on a low enough turnout: 36 or less players. Since we are drawing more than this number, and less than 48, it is likely that we will be limited to 3 rounds of round robin, unless the wildcard quarterfinals is eliminated. If more than 48 sign up, we will probably need to eliminate the wildcard round.

Just an idea. Any feedback? jefbstc@gmail.com

Error Inferences, Ah-So

Imagine if instead of cryptic, geeky text strings, your computer produced error messages in Haiku...they would read like these:

A file that big?
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.
The Web site you seek
cannot be located,
but endless others exist
Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.
ABORTED effort:
Close all that you have.
You ask far too much.
First snow, then silence.
This thousand dollar screen
dies so beautifully.
With searching comes loss
and the presence of absence:
"My Novel" not found.
The Tao that is seen
is not the true Tao, until
you bring fresh toner.
Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.
Stay the patient course.
Of little worth is your ire.
The network is down.
A crash reduces
your expensive computer
to a simple stone.
Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working
'Windows' is like that.
Three things are certain:
Death, taxes, and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.
You step in the stream,
but the water has moved on.
This page is not here.
Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.
Having been erased,
the document you're seeking
must now be retyped.
Rather than a beep
or a rude error message,
these words: "File not found."
Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank.
