APRIL 18 - 19, 2009 TOURNAMENT - ROUND ROBIN TEAM DOUBLES
The next tournament will be the weekend of April 18 - 19, 2009. The format will be a round robin, where players play with different partners. The difference is that pairings WILL NOT BE RANDOM! Instead, the organizers of the draw on Friday night will choose who plays who and with what partner. Effectively, each organizer will be a "team captain", and will try to win the most games for his/her team by first choosing the team and then deciding who plays together and against whom. The method of doing this draw was spelled out in detail in an earlier newsletter. If we have enough teams (so that less than 10 are on a team), then the members of the team win the "trophies" (T-shirts, visors, balls). If, however, there are too many on a team, we will break play into divisions, and the top individual scorers in each division win the trophies. We probably might have at least one round of mixed doubles, but mostly this will be a straight doubles tournament.As many wildflowers will persist into April this year, Borrego might still be a desirable destination for weekenders, and so it is a good idea to make reservations early. If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
ANNUAL BANQUETAs usual, we will have our annual April banquet on the Saturday night after completing this first day of play. Dinner will feature steaks and salmon bar-b-qued at the club. RSVP by sending your check to Ken Shallahamer. He MUST receive $18 per person by April 10 for you to get a dinner. If you wish, you can drop off door prizes, which will be awarded at the end of the dinner. Happy hour (BYOB) is at 6:30 and dinner is at 7 p.m.Make checks payable to Borrego Tennis Club, for $18 times the number of people.

BORREGO NEWSSandi had her clinic/tournament March 19 - 22. The clinic on the first day had 90°F+ weather, but much fun was had by all.
MARCH 2009 TOURNAMENT We had a fairly poor showing for the best weekend of the year in Borrego! Only 38 participated in the mixed doubles tournament, missing out on the best wildflower display in years. (20 men, 18 women). Weather was very pleasant with very little wind and moderate temperatures.
Mike Shoemaker won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Mike! Don Wilson donated his T-shirt prize to a draw, and Mary Quimby won that.
