A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

On Sunday, 2/15, Ken Shallahamer and Marilyn Bean gave a Club status report to the members. Fees were discussed and questions answered. Ken stated that we need a reserve in order to keep our Club going. Our monthly expenses, including rent, run approximately $1,400. If we only have 42 members playing tennis at $10 each, that income is only $420 per month. Therefore, it is necessary to ask everyone to join in the beginning of each season for the nominal fee of $75 so that we have a reserve..

As it stands now, a person (who has never been a member before) may play once a season for $10. If that person plays a second time in the same season, he or she must join the club. They can only play once per season for $10. However, if that person is a former member (from any past year), he or she must rejoin the club and pay the membership.

A prospective new member can play once for $10. Upon their return they must join the club, paying a prorated membership based on the remaining tournaments. For example, they play in October for $10. If they return in December then they join paying $10 to play and a membership of 5/6th or $62.50. If they don't return until February they would pay $10 to play and 3/6th or $37.50. They are now a member and anytime they return, the next season or seasons, they must pay the full membership dues, currently $75, plus the cost to play, currently $10.

Snowbird: Their primary residence must be more the 150 miles from Borrego Springs. They leave their primary residence for extended periods during the winter months. Without joining the club they can play in a maximum of 3 tournaments a season. One for $10, and two for $15. each.

Effective with the 2009-2010 season, we are asking that spouses or other non-tennis playing individuals also pay a membership fee of $75. We all enjoy the activities that go along with the tennis--bridge, poker, dominos, the club house, Jacuzzi, pool, showers, potlucks, and the surroundings in general. This is typical of any club or organization. The amenities are available and if you choose not to use them, that is your choice. We need this membership up front (in the beginning of the season) in order to keep the Club going. The members present voted to accept this proposal.

It was also noted that we need to bring in new members. Harold has a couple prospects and Marilyn spoke to Terry and Kersti after the meeting and these gals agreed to put a flyer in their respective tennis clubs, inviting people to visit us. We would like others to do the same.

The cost of the April banquet was discussed and the members recommended and voted to charge $18 per person. Banquet checks will be mailed or given to Ken. (Please keep separate from tennis fees to Harold.)

Thanks to everyone for your support and contributions in keeping this great Club going.

MARCH 14 - 15, 2009 TOURNAMENT - MIXED DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of March 14 - 15, 2009. The usual double-elimination seeded format will continue, with possible round robins thrown in. We will resume normal scoring of all matches.

This is the peak season with many expected to visit the valley to see wildflowers, and so it is a good idea to make reservations early. If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK
As usual, we will have a potluck on the Saturday night after completing this first day of play. If you wish, you can drop off door prizes, which will be awarded at the end of the dinner. Happy hour (BYOB) is at 6:30 and dinner is at 7 p.m.

BORREGO NEWS
Due to soaking rains in December and February, there will definitely be a good wildflower show.

APRIL 18 - 19, 2009 ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT and BANQUET

We will have our annual round robin tournament in April. Jef will ask volunteers to help with the draw. This will effectively make the format a team tennis format, as each volunteer will select a team and the pairings. Expect to play at least 4 sets of tennis over the weekend. The organizers of the draw will determine if any mixed doubles matches will be thrown in or not. Marilyn reports the banquet will cost $18 per participant, and will include steaks and salmon.

FEBRUARY 2009 TOURNAMENT

We had a moderately good turnout for the February tournament of 43 contestants (20 men, 23 women) for a weekend with good tennis weather -- cool and little wind, dodging rain on Friday night and the following Monday! We tried the "ZB Handicap" format for a 2nd time.

Newcomer, Brad Nash WOULD HAVE won the drawing, but was not present. Then Teresa SanFilippi WOULD HAVE won, but had just left. Finally, Carolyn Smith did win the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Carolyn!

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by Terry on Sep 22, 2004
LOVERS LANE

A cop was patrolling late one night in a well-known spot called, "Lovers' Lane." He sees a couple in a car, with the interior light brightly glowing.

The cop carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. Then he sees a young man behind the wheel, reading a computer magazine. He immediately notices a young woman in the rear seat, knitting.

Puzzled by this surprising situation, the cop walks to the car and gently raps on the driver's window.

The young man lowers his window. "Uh, yes, officer?"

"What are you doing?"

"Well, isn't it obvious? I'm reading a magazine, sir."

Pointing towards the young woman in the back seat, the cop says: "And her, what is she doing?"

The young man shrugs: "Sir, I believe she's knitting a pullover sweater."

Now, the cop is totally confused. A young couple. alone, in a car, at night... in a lovers' lane, and nothing obscene is happening!

"What's your age, young man?"

"I'm 25, sir..."

"And her ... what's her age?"

The young man looks at his watch and replies: "She'll be 18 in 20 minutes."
