APRIL 12 - 13, 2008 TOURNAMENT - STRAIGHT DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of April 12 - 13, 2008. The usual double-elimination seeded format will resume.

Even though the flower season is fading fast, it is a good idea to make reservations ASAP. If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

For some of those who aren't playing tennis, or who have a little extra energy left, Kathy has volunteered to run a singles (as opposed to doubles), co-ed ping pong tournament, concurrent with the tennis tournament. The format will be simple, and is mainly for fun, but with this group, the competitive spirit will enter into it, as well.

It is open to everyone, including people playing in the tennis tournament. The details will be worked out once we know how many will participate, but it will be a round robin. If there are too many participants (more than 10), then it will be broken into divisions. Everyone in a division plays everyone else in that division when both parties are available at the same time. They can play at anytime, but should finish all matches by about noon on Sunday.

Rules: each player plays x "first-to-21" standard ping pong sets. Where x is 3 for 2-8 contestants, 2 for 9-16 contestants, and 1 if more than 16 contestants. Scores are number of games won by each player. The score is reported to Kathy, and she will write it on a table on the bulletin board. Please sign up by 10 a.m. on Saturday. A sign-up sheet will be placed on the bulletin board, if you can't find Kathy.

Cost is $1 per person, and each division winner takes all the entry fees for that division.

APRIL 12th 6:30 PM BANQUET

The happy hour/banquet will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, April 12, 2008, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner. You should already have pre-paid Marilyn for the dinner, but if not, you can still pay her until April 7th.

Assaggio Italian Restaurant will cater our last tournament this year. The buffet menu will include:

The restaurant will furnish paper plates, etc., but do bring your own beverages. There will be no hors d'oeuvres served.

Cost: $12 per person if you have already paid, otherwise, $14 if paid by April 7. APRIL 7TH IS CUT OFF DATE. Checks are to be made out to BSTC. (Do not include with your money to Harold.) You may give your checks to Ken or me at the March tournament, or you may mail your checks to me. Call me if you have any questions: 714 525-3214.

Barry and Eileen have graciously agreed to be our MCs. It should be a fun evening. Hope you can all attend.

Thanks, Marilyn (our president)

BORREGO NEWS

We had a great flower season, but it will be well off its peak by the time of the next tournament. We've had warm dry weather for the past few weeks. Fields of dune sunflowers, desert dandelions, and verbena are well past their peak. Ocotillos are starting to bloom now, a very late start for them, and may still be going strong during the next tournament. Brittlebush are peaking as I write this on this last weekend of March, and will not be so impressive on April 12.

The Grangers hosted a clinic and their last tournament of the season on the last weekend of March. Gretchen Majors, a Wimbledon champion, exhibited her amazing tennis skills in a demo match of the girls against the guys. The girls won easily! Cool, but somewhat windy weather prevailed during the Granger tournament. After the award presentation, the 2 41-game winners, Paula Oswald and Doug Baker, played a demo super tie-breaker, and after witnessing some great tennis, the ladies again won!

High toss

Although most of the flowers down in the valley were gone, they were peaking in the foothills during the last weekend of March. Here is a hike Jef and Kathy went on on March 30:

MARCH 2008 TOURNAMENT

We had a moderately good turnout of 50 contestants (25 men, 25 women) for a weekend with pretty good weather. The format was a modified round robin format, where everyone played a lot of tennis. Several snafus occurred, due to the complexity of the format. The scores are to the right of names below. 300 is the average, and roughly corresponds to winning half of the games played. Denny Bean (AGAIN!) won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Denny!

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by Harold P, May 4, 2005
4 CATS

Four men were bragging about how smart their cats were.

The first man was an Engineer, the second man was an Accountant, the third man was a Chemist, and the fourth man was a Government Employee.

To show off, the Engineer called his cat, "T-square, do your stuff."

T-square pranced over to the desk, took out some paper and pen and promptly drew a circle, a square, and a triangle. Everyone agreed that was pretty smart.

But the Accountant said his cat could do better. He called his cat and said, "Spreadsheet, do your stuff."

Spreadsheet went out to the kitchen and returned with a dozen cookies. He divided them into 4 equal piles of 3 cookies. .Everyone agreed that was good.

But the Chemist said his cat could do better. He called his cat and said, "Measure, do your stuff."

Measure got up, walked to the fridge, took out a quart of milk, got a 10 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured exactly 8 ounces without spilling a drop into the glass. Everyone agreed that was pretty good.

Then the three men turned to the Government Employee and said, "What can your cat do?"

The Government Employee called his cat and said, "CoffeeBreak, do your stuff."

CoffeeBreak jumped to his feet,..... ate the cookies,.... drank the milk,.... shit on the paper,.... screwed the other three cats,.... claimed he injured his back while doing so,.... filed a grievance report for unsafe working conditions,.... put in for Workers Compensation,.... and went home for the rest of the day on sick leave...
