DECEMBER 8 - 9, 2007 TOURNAMENT - STRAIGHT DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of December 8 - 9, 2007. We are now in the middle of the season, so it is still a good idea to make reservations early. If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK

The happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, December 8, 2007, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.

FRIDAY HIKE

Due to smoke at the October tournament, nobody wanted to go hiking. If you want to go on a hike in December, contact Jef at jef@znet.com, and he'll show up at 9 a.m. If you want to go someplace you haven't been, suggest that for a hike. All Friday hikes must take no more than 3 hours, including transportation to/from clubhouse.

BORREGO NEWS

Temperatures in late November are very mild. Highs in the 70s. Should be perfect weather for tennis in December.

TRAILERS FOR RENT AT CLUB

Sandi and Borden said they have 2 trailers available to rent at the club. Contact them if you are interested.

OCTOBER 2007 TOURNAMENT

We had a fair turnout in October of 34 contestants. Only 31 originally signed up, but due to a severe shortage of women (19 men, 12 women), 3 women were drafted, and 4 played twice. The attendence was severely affected by the huge wildfires that devastated much of San Diego County, and many took a chance they might not make it to Borrego due to road closures. Fred Wantland was the M.C. for both the Saturday potluck and the Sunday award ceremony. Highlights of the potluck were Barry Frahm and Eileen Childress, both celebrating their 60th birthdays, receiving a nice gift basket from the club. Fred played with fire on selecting Marilyn to draw the winner of the $50 at the end of the tournament. Marilyn, as you recall, picked her own name at the previous tournament. People were joking, don't pick yourself or Denny (Mr. Marilyn). Marilyn took one look at it and rolled her eyes, handing it to Fred to read. "Denny Bean"!!! Congratulations, Denny.

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by Liz, 4-19-05
50th Anniversary

A man and his wife were about to celebrate 50 years together. Their three kids, all very successful and wealthy, agreed to a Sunday dinner in honor of their parents. As usual, they were all late and had a varied assortment of excuses.

"Happy anniversary Mom and Dad," gushed son number one... "Sorry I'm running late...had an emergency, you know how it is, didn't have time to get you both a present."

"Not to worry," said the Dad... "The important thing is that we're all together today."

Soon number two arrived and announced, "You and Mom still look great,Dad. Just flew in from L.A. and didn't have time to get you a present...sorry."

"It's nothing," said the father, glad you were able to be here."

Just then the daughter arrived. "Hello you both, happy anniversary! I'm sorry, but my boss is sending me out of town and I was really busy packing.... so I didn't have time to get you guys anything."

Again the father said, "I really don't care, at least the five of us are together today."

During dinner, the father put down his knife and fork, looked up and said, "Listen you three, there's something your mother and I wanted to tell you for a long time. Well... your mother and I came to this country penniless and desperate. Despite this, we were able to raise each of you and send you to college. We always knew we loved each other but... never got around to getting married."

The three kids gasped and said, "You mean we're BASTARDS?"

"Yep," said the Dad...."AND CHEAP ONES TOO."
