DECEMBER 2 - 3, 2006 TOURNAMENT - STRAIGHT DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of December 2 - 3, 2006. This is still the beginning of the season, so you should get lodging reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK

The happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7:15 p.m., Saturday night, December 2, 2006, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.

CHILI NIGHTS

On Friday, December 1, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., many Borrego merchants will decorate their stores with chili pepper lights, and provide some free food and drink. The event started 2 years ago and is the kick-off for the Christmas buying season. Local residents will be mailed passports, that when stamped by each business, will be good for discounts at all businesses. Some stores will start earlier. ABNHA will start at 4, for example, and some will keep it up until 7:30.

RALPH KIRSCH DIES

Longtime tennis club member, Ralph Kirsch, passed away November 8th. Ralph was a colourful character at the club and was notorious for kidding around and telling some tall tales. He was in fairly poor health these past few years, and I believe he made a final appearance at the club within the past year, but hasn't played in the tournament since April 2000. He once told me that he was with his father in the 20s, when their car broke down in Borrego. He had fond memories of hunting rabbits in this very sparsely populated valley. He will be missed. Services were held in a private ceremony by his family.
Should a memorium article be forthcoming, it will appear in a future newsletter After representives of the club sent a flower basket to his services, we received the following message:

Dear Friends,

Your kind words about Ralph will always be in my heart. The lovely basket of greenery was a real "upper" on a very sad day. Thank you so much. I am so grateful for your support and friendship and feel very lucky to be surrounded by all of you who knew and loved Ralph. Borrego is a special place and I am so thankful for you, my friends!

Fondly,
Barb Kirsch

BORREGO OBITUARIES

Charlotte Young, 1921 - 2006, passed away on Halloween, 2006, after having a stroke a few days prior. She was known to some long-time members of the club, and last visited during a potluck about 5 years ago. Her daughter, Barbara, made the previous logo for our tennis club. She moved from Borrego back to her home town of La Mesa about 10 years ago. Her obituary can be read by clicking on the following link at: the Union Tribune Obituaries.

Eris
Mrs. Eris Eckhart, owner of Borrego Home Video, and 1999 Honorary Mayor of Borrego, died November 4th. Jef and Kathy had her over for a Halloween party on October 21st. Although we knew she was ailing, she seemed fine. Jef saw her at her store on Halloween, and she still seemed fine. She passed away a few days later. A really nice lady, much loved by the community. She will be missed. Click on the photo at left, and see her at Jef and Kathy's Halloween party. Someone had given her the old uniform of La Casa del Zorro waitresses, and that was her unique costume for the party. She lived to learn that the latest planet in our solar system was also given the name Eris. Services were held November 11th at the Borrego Performing Arts Center, which she helped found and run, at the Center Mall.

According to a report in the Union Tribune and other sources, Chelsea Welborne, 14, of Borrego Springs, was pronounced dead at Borrego Springs High School, November 11, 2006. She was brought there by a Salton City man, flagged down by one of the survivors, because the ambulance was at that night's high school football game. She, apparently, had most of her body hanging out a window, when the driver, another teenager (with no license), turned around and told her and another teenager doing the same thing to quit fooling around. The driver drifted off the road, lost control, and rolled the SUV a few miles east of Borrego. Besides Chelsea, the driver and 2 others were seriously injured, and the 3 survivors were flown to 3 different hospitals by 3 helicopters. Services were held in Borrego on the 17th.

BORREGO DAYS

Most people thought 2005 had a better Borrego Days celebration, but 2006 was still good. Lodging was strained by 3 unrelated large groups staying in the valley that weekend: a large wedding, a movie production crew filming in Borrego, and a convention meeting of the Salk Institute. Regarding Saturday's parade, the San Diego Chicken was the Grand Marshall, and Jef took these pictures:

MEMBER HEALTH

John Schultz will undergo a 3rd operation on his knee, as it has drifted away from the right angle, and won't be able to play until early next year at the earliest. Kathy Johnson is having a recurrence of her back problem, and won't be back on the court until early next year at the earliest, also. Sandi Granger has a challenging condition, but hopefully will be able to play when her shoulder improves. Eileen childress played last tournament despite back problems, so hopefully, she is recovering. So many others have been sidelined recently, that this reporter can't keep up, however, Mary Quimby and Trish Azar both expect to be well enough to play in this tournament.

PRE-TOURNAMENT HIKE

Jef and Kathy forgot again this past October. Oops! Probably had something to do with Borrego Days. They will try to remember to be at clubhouse on Friday December 1 at 9 a.m. to lead a 1-2 hour hike somewhere in the valley. Noone mentioned their absence in October, so hopefully, nobody noticed. If they forget again, give them a call at 760-767-4536 at or before 9. Sandy Granger is sidelined with shoulder and other problems. Hopefully she will recover and return to the courts.

OCTOBER TOURNAMENT

We had a small turnout of 35 contestants for the October 28 - 29 mixed doubles tournament. Weather was great for the whole tournament. Jef only made a few mistakes when doing the draw, including 1 double booking for court 2. We started Friday with only 15 women and 19 men, so some women had to work a double shift on the court. Jim Perez was again eloquent in his emceeing elocution, as always, in summarizing the tournament and presenting the awards. Jan McNamarra would have won the $50 drawing, but wasn't at the club at the time of the drawing, so the next drawing will double to $100! Sorry, Jan :(
