OCTOBER 28 - 29, 2006 TOURNAMENT - MIXED DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of October 28 - 29, 2006. This is at the beginning of the season, but you should still get lodging reservations REALLY early, as Borrego Days is THIS PARTICULAR WEEKEND! Lots of stuff will be happening in town, as this is the most visited weekend of the year in Borrego. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@itforsb.net, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK

The happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, October 28, 2006, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.

APRIL 21 HIKE

Jef and Kathy led a 3.5 mile hike thru the Ocotillo Forest in the vicinity of Tubb Wash. Peg was the only other hiker. Ocotillos were exceptionally healthy, and some early cactus and agave flowers were evident.

APRIL 23 HIKE

Jef and Kathy led a 2.8 mile hike, with Denny, from the tennis club, going up Hellhole Wash to Surprise Canyon, then climbing out, re-crossing S-22, and doing the Borrego Spur, until finding a steep trail that descended behind the Holiday Trailer Park. They got back to the club in time to see most of the finals.

October 27 HIKE

Jef and Kathy will lead another (approximately 2 hour) hike on the Friday before the tournament. Meet at the clubhouse at about 9 a.m. on the Friday before the tournament. Expect to get back to the clubhouse by noon.

APRIL BANQUET AND ENTERTAINMENT

Palm Canyon Resort put on a nice spread, and we all had plenty to eat for the end of season banquet. After the food, the club returned to the clubhouse where entertainment was provided by Warner Springs resident, Judy Taylor. Judy sang and plucked her guitar with a good variety of great music, including a lot of western songs. She roped the audience into participating, as well, and at one time had all four of the kids playing instruments. Sally Biederbecke chimed in with a yodeling solo! The next round of entertainment involved rope tricks, which also involved audience talent. Then she showed some fancy six-gun twirling. Finally, she sang while some members of the club revealed their dancing skill, especially the Liebs and Wilsons!

GRANGERS RECEIVE GIFT FROM CLUB

Jackie Shallahamer, representing the club, presented an envelope with a card and gift certificate in it to the Grangers. This was to show the club's appreciation for all the Grangers have done to make these tournaments so enjoyable to all of us.

CEREUS LEGALII TENDERI (MONEY TREE) GIVEN TO KATHY AND JEF

As an unexpected event, Fred and Susan Flores Dow presented Jef and Kathy with a "Money Tree" as a wedding present from an overly generous tennis club. The "cactus" tree was decorated with flowers and hearts made from U.S. Treasury Notes in denominations of $5, $10, and $20, and totalling $570!!! Jef and Kathy were speechless, but are VERY thankful to their good friends at the club. After "harvesting" the fruit, they immediately opened their first joint checking account with the money, and will use it to help pay for their honeymoon in Hawaii later in June. Unfortuneately, during the "Money Tree" award ceremony only 1 picture came out, as Jef's lens cap was still partially on when Peg took the pictures. A few pix were taken in the clubhouse just before harvesting, however:

JEF AND KATHY MARRIED

Jef and Kathy were married barefoot in Coyote Creek on June 3, 2006. The Dows and about 50 others made it to the ceremony. The high temperature that day was an unseasonably warm 110°F! About 65 came to the banquet at Palm Canyon Resort, and most of those came to the reception at Kathy's house. The wedding album is at:

APRIL TOURNAMENT

We had a good turnout of 49 contestants for the April 22 - 23, 2006 straight doubles tournament. Weather was great for the whole tournament, except for some periods of fairly strong winds. Gary Edwards, again, did most of the work when assisting Jef in organizing the tournament. Borden Granger won the $100 drawing of the 16 who played in all 6 tournaments. Pete Azar won the $50 drawing.

CROQUET

As if the weekend wasn't busy enough, Barry and Eileen hosted a croquet party at their condo in de Anza after the tournament on Sunday. About 14 were there, including the Shallahamers, Grangers, Dows, Jef, Kathy, Holley, Russ, Dianne, Mary M., and naturally, Barry and Eileen. Of course, a tournament broke out, and the Dows won the finals. Russ and Dianne came in 2nd.
