DECEMBER 3 - 4, 2005 TOURNAMENT - STRAIGHT DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of December 3 - 4, 2005. Even though this is still at the beginning of the season, you might want to get lodging reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef: phone 760-767-4544, e-mail: jef@itforsb.net, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK

The happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, December 3, 2005, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.

DECEMBER 2nd HIKE

Jef and Kathy will lead a short (1 to 3 mile) hike on the Friday before the tournament. There may be up to 45 minutes of driving time (each way) to reach the hike area, depending on the selected location. Meet in the parking lot in front of the clubhouse on Palm Canyon Drive at 9 a.m. on Friday, December 2, 2005, if you wish to come along. Plan on returning by noon.

BORREGO NEWS

The Borrego Days Festival occurred the weekend just before the last tournament. Many considered it the best Borrego Days ever. A $35,000 grant was provided by the county, and several good bands played at the circle, including the Mar Dels. The 3rd Borrego High School re-union also happened on this weekend. The parade featured more than 80 entries.

NOVEMBER TOURNAMENT

We had a good turnout of 45 contestants for the November 5 - 6, 2005 mixed doubles tournament. Weather was just fine, with not too much wind and ideal temperatures. Kathy and Harold assisted Jef in doing the draw. John and Gary volunteered to help next time, after Jef over-booked some of the courts. Jef took these pictures of the winners. After Barbara Sullivan's name was drawn, but she was not present, Jef Johnson won the $50 drawing, half of which he donated back to the tennis club in lieu of paying newsletter expenses. Pictures below are by Jef.

MEMBER HEALTH

Barbara McClure is up and about, but has delayed her return to the courts due to aches and pains. John Schultz played in the last tournament, but has not yet completely gotten use to his new knees. Dave Quimby was scheduled for a hip replacement this month, but doctors found the staph infection is still there, so it has again been delayed. Bob Lehman is recovering from breaking his good leg, after tripping on his paralyzed leg.

CHANGES

Jef forgot to get contact information for new member George Debarian. Also failed to get contact info for Barbara Sullivan, Harold Larson, Concha Rivera, new info for the Ottes, Lisa Santos. Actually Kathy suggested using a sign-in sheet, where you can put any changes or new contact information.

RECYCLED E-MAIL JOKE circulated 5-17-2005 from Liz
Why men are confused...

A husband in his back yard is trying to fly a kite. He throws the kite up in the air, the wind catches it for a few seconds, then it comes crashing back down to earth. He tries this a few more times with no success.

All the while, his wife is watching from the kitchen window, muttering to herself how men need to be told how to do everything.

She opens the window and yells to her husband as he's holding the kite and looking dejected, "You need a piece of tail."

The man turns with a confused look on his face and says, "Make up your mind. Last night, you told me to go fly a kite."
