MARCH 20 - 21, 2004 TOURNAMENT - MIXED DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of March 20 - 21, 2004. This is in the season, so getting reservations may be wise. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Signup at clubhouse, or contact Gary Edwards: phone 619-390-8412, e-mail: garyre@cox.net, cel: 619-992-8412. The draw will be completed by 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 A.M. Please remember to share and consume at the goody bar on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

GOODY BAR AND POTLUCK

As usual, the potluck will occur Saturday: happy hour is at 6:30 p.m., and dinner will be at 7 p.m. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner. Julie Johnson is coming to town this day, and despite the long 700 mile drive, has volunteered to put on a belly dancing performance during the potluck, as she did several years ago.

REMEMBER TO FOLLOW THESE RULES AT THE CLUB

FEBRUARY TOURNAMENT

We had a good turnout of 44 contestants for the February 14 - 15 straight doubles tournament. Despite a few sprinkles on Saturday, the weather cooperated for another successful tournament. Pleasant temperatures and little wind. Jef used his new camera for the following pictures.

TOURNAMENT NEWS

Gary Edwards did his usual great job of emcee-ing the potluck on Saturday and Jim Perez did his usual great job at the awards ceremony. Many other members graciously contributed some yummy treats to the goody bar. Thanks to everybody for another wonderful weekend! Tatiana McClure won the $50 drawing. She had to be dragged out of the swimming pool to get her prize. Congratulations, Tatiana!

CHANGES

Betty Gibson is moving to Walnut Creek, which Denny says is east of San Francisco. Monica Herrlin, Tom Haskins, and Hal and Joanne Cohen are recent additions the new membership roster. If anyone needs an updated roster, contact Jef, and he can e-mail you the latest Word document.

SAN CLEMENTE CAMPOUT

The weekend of September 17 - 19 at San Clemente State Beach will the the scene of another BSTC tennis and camping weekend. For those who want to attend, please make reservations as early in March as possible, as sites are reserved quickly. Reservations can be made by calling 800-444-PARK (or 1-800-444-7275) or via website: www.reserveamerica.com, and try to reserve a premium campsite at San Clemente on those dates.

ANZA TENNIS CENTER NEWS

The public is invited to get together for doubles from 9 a.m. to noon on every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for the rest of the season. In addition, the last Sunday of each month is a round robin / potluck. Tennis starts at 12:30 p.m. at these events. During the last tournament, Gladys Lehman tackled the bridge drawer - all decks are now in a package or container are now full decks.

INJURIES AND ILLNESSES

Sonja reported that Janice Atzen has been sidelined with rotator cuff injuries in both arms, but mostly in the right. She won't be able to play tennis for the foreseeable future, but is able to play a little golf. Get healthy, Janice! Bob Lehman made an appearance at the club in February. He can get around with a cane and a brace, but he might not get feeling back to his leg after a recent hip replacement. Gladys says there's a chance the nerves can regenerate, but the longer it stays numb, the lesser the chance. We all hope he makes a full recovery, but we're thankful he and Gladys can, at least, visit us at the tournaments. Ruth Johnson still has bronchitis and will take at least another month to recover. Hopefully we will see her on the courts next season.

BORREGO NEWS

Borrego finally got some good rain on February 20th, and a few medium dousings during the next couple weeks. There are a few good displays of wildflowers this year, especially in the Coyote Canyon drainage on Henderson Canyon Road and to the north of Digiorgio Road. Not a spectacular wildflower year yet, but not bad. The last two tournament weekends should offer a great opportunity to drive around and check out the blooms.

APRIL BANQUET

On the Saturday night of April 17, 2004, the club will hold it's annual banquet at the tennis center. If you wish to attend, please pay Harriet Lisak $20 per person by April 1st. She will also need to know your meal choice. There are 2 choices of entrees: Steak or Salmon. Meals will be accompanied with assorted salads, wild rice, baked potatoes, assorted pan-fried vegetables, and fruit pie. If you pay by check, please make the check payable to BSTC.

Checks can be sent by mail to:

Harriet Lisak
6679 Linda Lane
San Diego CA 92120
You can tell Harriet your choice of entree in any of the following ways: in person at the next tournament, by phone at 619-466-5515, in the envelope containing the check you mailed, or by e-mail at hlisak@cox.net.

T-SHIRTS

Thanks to Harriet Lisak's idea of sorting shirts into plastic bags last January, it's much easier to select them now. Marilyn and Harriet spent 3 hours accomplishing this task. These embroidered BSTC T-shirts are available for only $10.00 each and can be purchased at each tournament. Or, on the other hand, you can just win them.

FEBRUARY HIKE

Jef, Harriet, and Bonnie went on an impromptu 2 mile hike to Big Spring. This is a relatively easy hike, and the trailhead is only about 8 miles from the club.
