DECEMBER 6 - 7 TOURNAMENT - STRAIGHT DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of December 6 - 7, 2003. This is in the season, so getting reservations may be wise. Sandi had recommendations for those staying at hotels: the Whispering Sands (just north of Christmas Circle) has $60/nite rooms for club members. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 5th. Signup at clubhouse, or contact Gary Edwards: phone 619-390-8412, e-mail: garyre@cox.net, cel: 619-992-8412. The draw will be completed by 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 A.M. Please remember to share and consume at the goody bar on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

GOODY BAR AND POTLUCK

As usual, the potluck will occur Saturday: happy hour is at 6:30 p.m., and dinner will be at 7 p.m. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner. Betty Minkel wants to remind people who like to share, to bring goodies on saturday and sunday mornings for the Goody Bar. Apparently there has been slim pickings lately. But actually, that's been good for Jef's diet.

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE RULES AT THE CLUB

SCHEDULE CHANGE

The January tournament has been moved one week forward to the weekend of January 17 - 18, due to conflict with the Granger tournament.

JIM RATHBUN PARTY

Over 100 attended Barbara's tribute to Jim Rathbun. The party celebrated Jim's life. It took place on Saturday, November 15, 2003. More than 50 played tennis at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, enjoying Jim's favorite game. Then some excellent food, fellowship and remembrances at the Musical Theater West Rehearsal Hall, nearby and also in Jim's home town of Long Beach. Symphony flutists performed an amazing rendition of one of Jim's favorites: Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, despite protesting that Mozart hated flutes! 3 very talented singers performed songs by Jim's favorite song writer, Cole Porter, and songs Barbara felt represented Jim's life, most especially "I did it my Way". John Schultz, Fred Dow, and others reminded us of Jim's finest qualities, like being able to quickly arrive at the truth and act as a catalyst for others to get things done, being a pleasure to talk with, being non-judgemental, and many of the other fine qualities that we all saw in him. Thanks to Barbara for a wonderful evening honoring Jim, who would have certainly approved.

OCTOBER TOURNAMENT

We had a great turnout of 44 contestants for the October 25 - 26 mixed doubles tournament. Although the mercury hit the mid 90s on Saturday, perfect conditions for tennis ensured some quality tennis in the finals on Sunday. Borrego Days was celebrated this weekend, as well, and Janel represented the club in the parade. She drives a pink mercedes, and says that if everyone in the country drove a pink car, we'd be a "Pink Car-Nation" (har, har, har). Unfortunately fires blocked many exit routes for the visiting San Diegans, some of whom were worried about their homes. Jef took the following pictures, but it ain't a great camera, and part of kersti and Mimi got cut off... Sorry Kersti and Mimi!

TOURNAMENT NEWS

The Shallahamers did a great job of emcee-ing the potluck. Several members reminisced on events featuring our late president, Jim Rathbun. The food was excellent, as usual. The weather was great, although a bit warm on Saturday. Janel drove her convertible in the Borrego Days parade for the tennis club. Don Wilson obtained new embroidered T-shirts for prizes. We had a blackout for a couple hours on Sunday afternoon, due to all the fires in San Diego. Many were worried about getting back home, as many roads were closed. Rosalyn Smyth won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Roz!

ANZA TENNIS CENTER NEWS

Borden has increased the size of the clubhouse by adding two extensions, one to the east and an office to the west. These will be mostly completed by the next tournament. Those of us at the last tournament may have noticed the new slabs. The Grangers invited the local community to come over for tennis and a BBQ on Saturday, November 22nd. Thanks, Borden and Sandi!

SANDI'S TOURNAMENT

The Grangers next tournament will be 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 straight doubles. The cost of $50 includes a friday night margarita party, and a saturday night BBQ. If you wish to participate, fill out the application, which can be obtained from the Grangers, by December 22. The tournament will take place between friday, January 9, to sunday, January 11th, 2004. On thursday, January 8, there will be 2 3 hour clinics from Robert Sterk, USPTA, and another instructor for $30 per session.

GRANGERS RECOGNIZED

The Grangers were recently recognized by the USTA for having the best Senior Tournament in the Pacific Northwest Section in 2003. The tournament was held in Aug-Sept at their grass courts in Baker City, Oregon. Thanks to Ken Shallahamer for providing this and the previous notes.

OCTOBER HIKE

Harold, Ruth, and Jef went up to Culp Valley to explore the old Paroli homestead, which featured a few non-native trees, Paroli Spring, the Paroli Yoni, and a few remnants of the dwelling. They also checked out the area around Lew's Spring nearby.

RECYCLED E-MAIL POEM circulated by Harold Plett 11-25-2002

TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING,
BUT I JUST COULDN'T SLEEP
I TRIED COUNTING BACKWARDS,
I TRIED COUNTING SHEEP.

THE LEFTOVERS BECKONED -
THE DARK MEAT AND WHITE
BUT I FOUGHT THE TEMPTATION
WITH ALL OF MY MIGHT

TOSSING AND TURNING
WITH ANTICIPATION
THE THOUGHT OF A SNACK
BECAME INFATUATION.

SO, I RACED TO THE KITCHEN,
FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR
AND GAZED AT THE FRIDGE,
FULL OF GOODIES GALORE.

I GOBBLED UP TURKEY
AND BUTTERED POTATOES,
PICKLES AND CARROTS,
BEANS AND TOMATOES.

I FELT MYSELF SWELLING
SO PLUMP AND SO ROUND,
! 'TIL ALL OF A SUDDEN,
I ROSE OFF THE GROUND.

I CRASHED THROUGH THE CEILING,
FLOATING INTO THE SKY
WITH A MOUTHFUL OF PUDDING
AND A HANDFUL OF PIE.

BUT, I MANAGED TO YELL
AS I SOARED PAST THE TREES....
HAPPY EATING TO ALL -
PASS THE CRANBERRIES, PLEASE.

MAY YOUR STUFFING BE TASTY,
MAY YOUR TURKEY BE PLUMP.
MAY YOUR POTATOES 'N GRAVY
HAVE NARY A LUMP,
MAY YOUR YAMS BE DELICIOUS
MAY YOUR PIES TAKE THE PRIZE,
MAY YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER
STAY OFF OF YOUR THIGHS.
