JANUARY TOURNAMENT

It's that time again. Our next tournament will be mixed doubles on the weekend of January 11 and 12 in the new year of 2003. As usual there will be a potluck at 7 on Saturday, with happy (half)hour at 6:30. The Quimbys will emcee this event. Because we are now in the busy season for Borrego, it is important to make your reservations early since motels and campgrounds tend to be busy on weekends until the end of the season in late April. We hope to see you all in Borrego for this weekend. A limited number of sites are now available at the tennis club, but due to too much demand, RV parking is available for 4 days surrounding the tournament, starting Thursday, but due to high demand, will be determined by lottery, which will be held on the Saturday of each tournament (for the next tournament). Details are available on the BSTC website on the Anza Borrego Tennis Center page, or you can call the Grangers at (760)767-0577 for details. If you are planning to play, please sign up by Friday, January 10 at 7:30 P.M. at the clubhouse in Borrego Springs. If you cannot be at the clubhouse by 7:00 P.M., please ask someone who will be there to sign up for you. You may also sign up by phoning Gary Edwards at home at 619-390-8412 before Thursday of that week or trying his cell phone at 619-992-8412. PLEASE LET GARY KNOW WHETHER YOU ARE COMING BY 7:30 P.M. SO THAT HE CAN BEGIN THE DRAW. The draw will be completed by 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 A.M.

DECEMBER TOURNAMENT

We had a fair turnout of 43 contestants for the December 7 - 8 tournament. The weather was perfect, and everyone was astounded at the improvements which included complete renovation of the men's bathroom, a new coke machine, widening of the parking lot, and the start of a swimming pool. The following summarizes the results of the December tournament:

BORREGO NEWS

Sandi Granger is hosting another tournament starting on January 23rd. Please see Sandi for details.

Walking up Palm Canyon, the most popular hike in Borrego, Jef noticed a good part of the canyon was not affected by the fire. Park employees who were clearing the canyon of salt cedar (a non-native plant), mentioned that 2 fires had affected the canyon this year, one in April and the other in July. Neither fire ever progressed down to the first palm grove, so more than 99% of all hikers won't notice any fire impact. Jef also discovered when hiking 2.5 miles beyond the first palm grove, that only good rock climbers can penetrate beyond the 2500' contour of the main fork in Palm Canyon.

JANUARY BORREGO HIKE

There will be a hike on Friday, January 10, 2003. We will meet in the parking lot of the clubhouse at 9 a.m. Whoever wants to risk his/her vehicle going up Coyote Canyon will shuttle people (as far up as the volunteer is willing to risk). We can then hike up Coyote Creek, perhaps even as far as Santa Catarina Spring. Old ratty shoes are recommended, as you may get them wet! For those who haven't gone up Coyote Creek, it is a verdant paradise surrounded by desert. Coyote Creek has been described as the most reliable water source in San Diego County. This will be a fairly level hike. Allow 3 hours, including about 1 hour of driving.

Joe took his blind date to the carnival.

"What would you like to do first, Kim?" asked Joe.

"I want to get weighed" she said.

They ambled over to the weight guesser. He guessed 120 pounds. She got on the scale; it read 117 and they won a prize. Next the couple went on the Ferris Wheel. When the ride was over, Joe again asked Kim what she would like to do.

"I want to get weighed," she said.

Back to the weight guesser they went. Since they had been there before, he guessed her correct weight, and Joe lost his dollar.

The couple walked around the carnival and again he asked where to next.

"I want to get weighed," she responded.

By this time Joe figured she was really weird and took her home early, dropping her off with a handshake. Her roommate, Laura, asked her about the blind date, "How'd it go?"

Kim responded, "Oh, Waura, it was wousy!"
