2002 - 2003 SEASON

It's that time again. Our next tournament will be mixed doubles on the weekend of October 26, 27. Because this weekend coincides with Borrego Days, it is important to make your reservations early since motels and campgrounds tend to be very busy that weekend. Hope to see many of you in Borrego for the October tournament.

BORREGO NEWS

There was a little excitement in the Valley in early August with the Pines fire changing the landscape to the west of Borrego. You will see the devastation if you drive in through Julian or Ranchita. The fire actually came within 2 miles of the tennis club, reaching down below the lowest tree (a sycamore) at the mouth of Hellhole Canyon. The 65,000 acre fire burned for days on San Ysidro Mountain and Indianhead, and destroyed about 3 dozen structures in Julian and Ranchita.

Summer was abnormally hot with more than 110 consecutive days with highs above 100°F. Temperatures averaged about 2°F above normal, and as late as the last week of September, the mercury exceeded 110°F. However, the absolute high was a rather low 115°F. A cold front put an abrupt end to the heat at the end of September, and pleasant weather should, hopefully, greet club members as they return to the valley later this month.

ORANGE COUNTY NEWS by Marilyn Bean

If you drive North on the 5 Fwy and continue West on the 91, you will come to an area called Orange County. Yes, there is life beyond San Diego and Hemet. The people here are lots of fun and like to do interesting things. Here's how a few of our OC members spent the summer:

Don & Bonnie Wilson: The Wilsons took a 4,600 motorhome trip, ending up in their home states of North Dakota and Minnesota. Don's sister and brother-in-law were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Don is one of nine brothers and sisters. 85 relatives showed up for a picnic. (That's a lot of hot dogs,!) Don and Bonnie got to stay at his brother's farm and spend a week at a lake in No. Minnesota. On the way home they stopped at Glacier National Park and the Flathead Lake area of Montana, and visited Indian museums and learned a lot about the Plains Indians. Their final stop was Yellowstone... a great way to end a beautiful trip.

Harold Plett: Harold spent three wonderful weeks in Australia where he joined John & Harriet. He also went backpacking in the Sierra's with his two daughters and grandson. Denny Bean also joined them. Harold also had a family reunion in Turlock, CA and, as usual, he enjoyed the San Clemente outing.

Dave & Barbara McCary: The McCarys have a summer tradition where they spend a week in July at Newport Dunes. (Would you believe an RV space on the beach front costs $160/night!) Barb says it's worth every penny. All the kids come down and surf, kayak, ride bikes and lots of other fun stuff. The family also enjoyed a week in Catalina. These places are special to their family and Dave thoroughly enjoys these outings.

Denny & Marilyn Bean: Last May the Beans met their Canadian friends in Rome. Tony is Italian, very fluent in the language and likes to drive. How lucky for Marilyn & Denny. It's much easier getting lost with someone who knows the language. After touring Rome, the four of them drove to Tuscany and toured this beautiful area, including Cinque Terra, and enjoyed the Italian Riviera along the way. Returning to Rome, Marilyn and Denny continued to Pompeii and Sorrento. The food and weather were great. Denny graduated from Palm Springs High School and they recently attended his 50th reunion in the Desert.

Hopefully, the rest of our community will have some interesting summer stories to share when we all meet in Borrego. See you then.

OREGON and RIVERSIDE, other SAN DIEGO NEWS

Other than my hearing that the Shallahamers won a tournament in Baker OR, and a great time was had with the BSTC group in San clemente, nothing was reported. If you have anything worth reporting, you can submit it to jef@znet.com.

RECYCLED E-MAIL JOKE

A freshman at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."

And for plenty of good reasons, since:
1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2. it is a major component in acid rain
3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4. accidental inhalation can kill you
5. it contributes to erosion
6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical. Forty-three said yes, six were undecided, and only one knew that the chemical was water. The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?" He feels the conclusion is obvious.
